South by Southwest has announced the bulk of its 2016 lineup, and eight of twenty films in competition are female-helmed or co-helmed: That amounts to a not-at-all shabby 40%. In 2015, only 25% of the films in competition were directed or co-directed by women. What a difference a year makes -- in the Competition sections, at least. Female filmmakers are typically better represented in the documentary world than the narrative, but happily women account for 40% of both the Narrative Feature and Documentary Feature Competitions at the 23rd edition of SXSW.
