Toronto Deal: Magnolia Buys Terence Davies' Sumptuous 'Sunset Song'

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to "Sunset Song," and plans to release the film theatrically in Spring 2016. Adapted from the influential 1932 Scottish novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, the film stretches a few significant years in the life of Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn), who learns love and sex the hard way over a harvest cycle of trials and tragedies. This is a surprising acquisition from Magnolia, which also picked up Norwegian Oscar entry "The Wave" out of TIFF. Like any Davies film, "Sunset Song" won't be an easy sell stateside. But for patient viewers looking for knockout tableaux and the sort of slow cinema of storytelling yesteryear...
